Federal income tax applies to every Canadian regardless of province, and 2026 is a landmark year: it’s the first full year with the bottom federal rate at 14%, down from the 15% that stood for nearly two decades (2025 was a transitional 14.5%, as the cut took effect mid-year). Every taxpayer benefits, since everyone’s first dollars flow through the bottom bracket — the Parliamentary Budget Officer estimates an average saving of roughly $190 per filer.
For 2026, all five federal brackets are indexed by 2%: 14% applies to taxable income up to $58,523, 20.5% to $117,045, 26% to $181,440, 29% to $258,482, and 33% above that. The basic personal amount rises to $16,452, meaning that much income is effectively federal-tax-free for most Canadians — worth a credit of about $2,303 at the 14% rate.
One nuance most tables miss: the BPA isn’t flat. It’s enhanced for incomes up to $181,440, then phases down to $14,829 as income approaches $258,482. That phase-out quietly adds about 0.29 percentage points to the true marginal rate through the 29% bracket — so the real federal marginal rate between $181,440 and $258,482 is roughly 29.29%, a detail that matters for bonus timing and RRSP planning at that income level.
Remember that federal tax is only half the picture — your province or territory adds its own brackets on top, and the combined marginal rate is what actually applies to your next dollar. Top combined rates in 2026 range from 44.5% in Nunavut to 54.8% in Newfoundland and Labrador.
