How to Use the Sales Tax Calculator
Enter the dollar amount you want to check, select the province or territory where the sale takes place, and the calculator instantly breaks down the federal GST, any provincial tax (HST, PST, RST, or QST), and the final total. Because sales tax in Canada isn’t the same everywhere, choosing the correct province is the most important step — the combined rate ranges from 5% in Alberta to nearly 15% in the Atlantic provinces and Quebec.
Types of Sales Tax in Canada
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is the 5% federal tax that applies in every province and territory.
HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) combines the 5% federal GST with a province’s own tax into a single rate collected by the Canada Revenue Agency. Five provinces use it: Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island.
PST and RST (Provincial and Retail Sales Tax) are charged separately, on top of the 5% GST, in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba (Manitoba calls its version RST).
QST (Quebec Sales Tax) is Quebec’s 9.975% provincial tax, administered by Revenu Québec alongside the federal GST.

How Sales Tax Is Calculated
To add tax to a price, multiply the pre-tax amount by the combined rate. A $1,000 purchase in Ontario (13% HST) works out to $130 in tax and a $1,130 total. In provinces with separate taxes, each is applied to the pre-tax price — a $1,000 item in British Columbia carries $50 GST plus $70 PST, for $1,120 in total. To work backward from a tax-included price, divide the total by one plus the rate; for Ontario, divide by 1.13.
