Alberta’s $1,000 satellite internet rebate is available to eligible rural and remote households that cannot get high-speed land-based internet. In an October 13, 2026 announcement, the province highlighted the program for roughly 10,000 households beyond the reach of current broadband expansion projects.
It is a reimbursement for eligible equipment and installation, not a $1,000 cheque for every rural resident. You must check your property’s eligibility, purchase qualifying equipment, start service, and submit receipts. The application window runs through March 31, 2027, and qualifying purchases must have been made no earlier than August 11, 2026.
Who qualifies for the Alberta satellite rebate?
According to the province’s Alberta Satellite Rebate Program rules, the rebate targets households in rural or remote Alberta without access to high-speed broadband and without a government-funded expansion project planned or underway to serve their address. Living outside a city does not automatically make a property eligible.
The government uses federal broadband availability data to assess individual locations. Before ordering equipment, use the eligibility map on the official program page. Search your home address or legal land description, then place a pin at the actual residence. The map, rather than a broad community name or postal code, determines whether your location is eligible under the program’s published criteria.
Both homeowners and renters can apply. Only one rebate is available per household, and a verified Alberta.ca account can normally submit applications for up to two households. People with more than two eligible properties can request a review through the appeal process.
What does the $1,000 cover?
The maximum is $1,000 per eligible household, limited to the eligible expenses actually paid. The rebate covers qualifying low-Earth-orbit satellite hardware, installation services and supplies, and applicable taxes. It does not cover the ongoing internet subscription.
| Expense | Covered? |
|---|---|
| Eligible satellite dish and receiver kit from an authorized seller | Yes |
| Mounts, brackets, additional cable and qualifying installation | Yes |
| Applicable tax on eligible equipment and installation | Yes |
| Monthly internet plan | No |
| Monthly equipment rental | No |
| Optional Wi-Fi router or extender | No |
| Business internet installation | No |
| Equipment purchased before August 11, 2026 | No |
As of October 14, 2026, Alberta identifies Starlink hardware as meeting the technical requirements. The authorized sellers listed by the province include Starlink, Best Buy, Home Depot, London Drugs, Visions Electronics and Walmart. Other suppliers may be added. If buying directly from Starlink, check that you are purchasing the hardware rather than renting it.
The program’s high-speed standard is at least 50 Mbps download, 10 Mbps upload and latency of no more than 50 milliseconds. Those specifications matter because not every satellite product qualifies.
How much could a household save?
Suppose an eligible household pays $700 for approved hardware and $200 for eligible installation, plus 5% GST. The qualifying total is $945: ($700 + $200) × 1.05. Assuming all costs are accepted, the rebate would reimburse $945, not the full $1,000 maximum.
In a second example, $950 in approved equipment plus $200 in installation and $57.50 in GST comes to $1,207.50. The maximum reimbursement would be $1,000, leaving $207.50 of those initial costs with the household. In both cases, monthly subscription charges remain the customer’s responsibility.
These are PaycheckGuru calculations illustrating the program cap, not quoted Starlink prices or guaranteed reimbursements. Your actual eligible amount depends on the receipts and the province’s review.
How to apply without buying the wrong equipment
- Check your address first. Use Alberta’s official eligibility map to confirm that the property qualifies. If the map says you are covered by existing broadband, do not assume that slow real-world service automatically qualifies you.
- Choose eligible equipment. Confirm that the satellite service meets the program’s speed and latency requirements and that the hardware comes from an authorized seller.
- Purchase and activate service. Pay the equipment and installation costs upfront within the August 11, 2026 to March 31, 2027 eligible period. The program instructs applicants to apply after their first month of service.
- Keep the invoices. Gather the hardware and installation receipts, create a verified Alberta.ca account, and submit the application through the official portal with direct deposit information.
- Submit by March 31, 2027. That is the published end of the application window. The province does not promise that every application will receive the full $1,000. Because Alberta also instructs applicants to wait until after their first month of service, do not leave the purchase until the end of March. Check the application timing with the program before spending money close to the deadline.
If the eligibility map says your property has broadband access but providers will not actually connect it, Alberta offers an appeal route. You will need evidence from the internet service providers serving the area, such as emails confirming that 50/10 Mbps service is unavailable or screenshots of address-check results. The official program page explains the documentation.
What the October announcement changes
Alberta’s October 13 announcement brought renewed attention to the rebate, but the eligible purchase period began on August 11, 2026. This is not a newly announced universal household payment. The province estimates that around 10,000 addresses are outside current broadband expansion coverage, and the program is designed for that relatively small group.
For a qualifying household, the practical decision is whether a satellite connection is worth the ongoing monthly cost after the installation rebate. A reimbursement can make the initial equipment affordable, but it does not lower the monthly bill. Compare the service’s regular price and reliability with whatever other options your address has before committing.
Next step: Check the official Alberta eligibility map and application instructions before purchasing hardware. Save the eligibility result and your receipts, then apply after your first month of service.
