Nova Scotia Personal Marginal Income Tax Rates 2026

Nova Scotia enters 2026 in year two of a genuine structural shift: after decades without inflation protection, the province now indexes its tax brackets and key credits annually. The 2026 indexation factor is 1.6% — based on Nova Scotia’s own CPI, which runs on a different measurement window than the federal 2% factor — lifting all four bracket thresholds and pushing the basic personal amount to $11,932. The unpopular income-tested BPA supplement is gone: every Nova Scotian now gets the full amount regardless of income.

That’s real progress, but the underlying structure remains the heaviest in the country. Rates of 8.79%, 14.95%, 16.67%, 17.5%, and 21% are unchanged, and the brackets bite early — the 14.95% second rate starts at barely $31,000 of income, a threshold most provinces don’t reach until $45,000–$60,000. The result: a Nova Scotian earning $75,000 pays noticeably more provincial tax than someone with the same income in New Brunswick, and thousands more than in Alberta or BC.

At the top, Nova Scotia’s 54% combined federal-provincial marginal rate remains the highest top rate in Canada alongside Newfoundland’s 54.8% — and it applies from a much lower provincial threshold (the 21% provincial rate begins around $157,000). For high earners and incorporated professionals, this makes tax-sheltered vehicles like RRSPs, and careful salary/dividend planning, more valuable in Nova Scotia than almost anywhere else in the country.

The federal side offers some relief: the bottom federal rate is 14% for all of 2026, trimming tax on the first $58,523 for everyone. Get your precise 2026 numbers with our Nova Scotia Tax Calculator.
