Newfoundland and Labrador Personal Marginal Income Tax Rates 2026

Newfoundland and Labrador runs the most finely-graduated income tax system in Canada: eight provincial brackets ranging from 8.7% all the way to 21.8%, with the top rates reserved for genuinely exceptional incomes — the final 21.8% bracket doesn’t begin until income exceeds roughly $1.14 million, a threshold that exists nowhere else in the country.

For 2026, the province indexed its brackets and credits by just 1.1% — noticeably below the 2% federal factor. That gap is a subtle form of bracket creep: NL thresholds rise more slowly than federal ones, so a raise that keeps pace with national inflation pushes slightly more of your income into higher provincial brackets each year. It’s less aggressive than Manitoba’s outright freeze or PEI’s non-indexation, but it compounds over time.

The practical impact depends heavily on where you sit. Middle earners face fairly typical Atlantic rates — 14.5% provincial on income in the second bracket, for a combined 34.5% with the 20.5% federal rate. High earners, though, should note that NL’s top combined marginal rate reaches 54.8% — the highest in Canada — on income above the final threshold, edging out even Nova Scotia’s 54%. The silver lining is that most of NL’s upper brackets (20.8%, 21.3%, 21.8%) apply only at incomes of roughly $282,000, $564,000, and $1.14 million, so the very top rates touch a tiny fraction of filers.

With the federal bottom rate at 14% for all of 2026, the entry combined rate is 22.7%. See exactly where your income lands across all eight brackets with our Newfoundland and Labrador Tax Calculator.
